Quality

Why does flash frozen fish taste better?

The great taste of fresh seafood is preserved through a combination of flash freezing and vacuum packing. Flash freezing the fish at an extremely low temperature preserves the integrity of the flesh; vacuum packing the flash-frozen fish eliminates the seafood’s exposure to oxygen. When used together, these processes ensure the same delicious taste you would expect from freshly-caught fish.

How do you assure quality?

We source our product nearby, from fish suppliers in the Pacific Northwest. And our seafood is vacuum-packed immediately after the fish is caught, guaranteeing unparalleled freshness and flavor.

How do your prices compare with prices at the grocery store?

Our prices are comparable to high-quality grocery stores. And we think you will agree our quality is second to none.

What if I'm not satisfied with the product?

Please Contact us if you are dissatisfied with any item. You can leave a message for us at 206-579-5488 or contact us via e-mail at homedelivery@surfinseafood.com. We have very high expectations for the quality of each and every piece of fish we deliver. If you are dissatisfied with the quality of an item, we will be happy to replace or credit you for the item.

Orders

Do I have to order fresh fish every month?

No. Of course, we hope you will, but there is no requirement to place an order every month. You can place an order every month, every other month, or just order whenever you want delicious, fresh seafood.

What kinds of fresh seafood do you provide?

We offer the best in-season, sustainable seafood. Our monthly selections include at least five different varieties of seafood: • Salmon; • Halibut; • A bottom fish such as Sole, Cod, Trout, Catfish or Tilapia; • An exotic fish such as Mahi-Mahi, Albacore Tuna, or Blue Marlin; • A shellfish such as Prawns, Scallops, or Dungeness Crab.

Can I make a substitution if I do not like something offered in the package?

Substitutions are always welcome. And you can now create your own order, a la carte. Simply select what you like from this month’s offerings of fresh seafood. Please note that there is a minimum order for van delivery.

When will I get my package?

Order fish online by Tuesday, and you can get your package the week you order. Packages of fresh fish are shipped out Monday – Thursday of our delivery week (typically the second week) each month. We do not ship packages of fresh fish on Friday to avoid extra charges involving a Saturday delivery. Please note that we cannot deliver to P.O. Boxes or A.P.O. and F.P.O. addresses.

You say that the seafood fillets and shellfish are packaged in ¾ pound to 1–pound portions. Which is it?

We always strive to give you the maximum amount of product possible. However, while we always package the salmon in 1-pound pieces and the halibut in ¾-pound pieces, the amount of bottom fish, exotic fish, and shellfish will change as the purchase price fluctuates throughout the month. We report the contents of each package on our website about a month before we purchase the fish.

I ordered a Mini Pack, which advertised 23 to 25 portions. But there are only 8 packages of fish in my cooler. Did you forget part of my order?

No, we did not forget … Once you start eating, you will find that all the fresh fish we promised is there. We do not package our fresh seafood in single portions. Instead, we prepare vacuum packs that include ¾-pound to 1 pound of fresh fish each. We package this way for two reasons: 1) A ¾-pound to 1-pound pack is the ideal size for most of our customers. It is a full meal for a family with two adults and two children or for three adults. Single packs are also perfect for seafood recipes for two adults with some wonderful leftovers for the next day; 2) This size pack is perfect for preparation. For example, a 1-pound salmon fillet is small enough to be manageable on the grill, but large enough to retain its moisture and tenderness as it cooks.

How much space will an order of seafood take up in my freezer?

We package our seafood in vacuum packs of approximately 1 pound each. Vacuum packing makes our seafood packages somewhat flat, so you can easily stack them on a shelf in your freezer and still have plenty of room for all your other necessities. And each piece is ¾-pound to 1 pound in size, making it just the right amount for a family meal. A Mini Pack [link to package on Shop Now page] will contain between 8.5 and 10 pounds of seafood, divided into 8 to 10 vacuum packs (usually 2 each of 4 to 5 different types of seafood). A Grilling or Family Pack [link to package on Shop Now page] will contain between 9.5 and 11 pounds of seafood, and a Seafood Lover Pack [link to package on Shop Now page] will contain between 10 and 11.5 pounds.

Delivery

Do I need to be home at the time of delivery?

No. In fact, most of our customers are not home when we make our grocery delivery. To assure freshness, we deliver the seafood to you in a 24-quart cooler with four ice packs. The flash frozen fish leaves our shop frozen at -20 degrees, so it will stay rock-solid frozen for up to 10 hours, no worries.

How do I know what kinds of fish I have received?

We label each pack of fish so you can tell what it is at a glance. We also indicate the exact items in each package on the newsletter that accompanies your food delivery, so you can make sure you received exactly what you were supposed to!

What should I do with the cooler?

Hold on to that cooler and the ice packs that came with it upon delivery. When you are ready to buy seafood online again, just leave your cooler with ice packs out for us, and we will replace it with a fresh one filled with your selections. If you are no longer able to order again, just let us know, and we will pick up your cooler on our next delivery day in your neighborhood and return your $20 cooler deposit.

How can I pay for my seafood?

Payments must be made prior to or at time of seafood delivery. We offer two methods of payment: • Online using a credit card; • COD either by leaving out a check for us on the day of delivery, or by sending a check to us in advance to Surfin’ Seafood, 126 Winslow Way W, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110. We will not deposit your check until your delivery has been made.

Shipping

Do you ship your packages to other cities?

Yes, we ship packages to any place that USPS or FedEx delivers. Our product is packaged using plenty of gel packs or dry ice in an insulated cooler – this packaging combination will ensure that your fish fillets arrive frozen and in excellent condition.

How much is shipping?

Shipping costs vary based on weight and final destination. Please note that shipping to rural areas will require Priority Overnight Service which will be more expensive.

Seafood Safety

How should I thaw my seafood for preparation

The goal is to keep your seafood continuously cold. To do this, thaw the seafood slowly in the refrigerator. Fillets, steaks and shellfish will generally thaw out overnight or in a day. If you need a quicker way to thaw, here are a few options: • Run the vacuum-packed seafood under cold, running water. • Immerse the package in a bowl of cold water and keep in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours per pound of seafood. • Remove seafood from the vacuum-packing and defrost it in the microwave on low power (30 percent) for 15 – 30 seconds.

How long will flash frozen, vacuum packed seafood stay fresh in my freezer?

Any of the vacuum-packed seafood we deliver will stay fresh in your freezer for up to one year.

How do I know if seafood is really fresh?

With seafood, you want to test the texture and the smell. With texture, you are looking for firmness. With smell, you want your seafood to smell like the sea, but not “fishy.”

What about high mercury levels in fish? Should I be worried?

Mercury is prevalent in certain seafood but not all, so eating a variety of different types of fish (like the ones we provide) will protect you from any undue exposure. If you have specific concerns, please consult your doctor.

How long will your seafood stay fresh in my freezer?

Our vacuum-packed seafood will stay fresh in your freezer for up to one year, so you do not have to worry about eating it all before you place your next order. We vacuum pack and flash freeze our seafood in special freezer-quality plastic that protects it from oxygen and freezer burn until you are ready to thaw and prepare it.

One of my bags of prawns was not sealed. What should I do?

Many times, the prawn bags are not sealed because the appendages of the prawn may poke holes through the bag. Don’t worry: Products that we bring in already frozen (i.e. prawns, scallops, and mahi- mahi) typically form a very thin layer of ice on the outside, naturally sealing in taste and freshness. If your product does not taste great, please let us know, and we will be happy to replace them! If you would like to have only sealed bags of prawns in the future, please make a note of it on your packing list and we will be sure to grab the sealed bags for you. Please note: Other seafood items should always have a full vacuum-packed seal. If you receive any product, aside from prawns, scallops, or mahi-mahi that is not sealed, please let us know right away, and we will be happy to replace it.

What if a little bit of the fish is soft by the time I got home to empty out the cooler?

Because all of the air is sucked out during the vacuum-packing process, the quality of the fish is protected by the seal. A little softening is fine – just stick it in your freezer as soon as you can.

What if I have leftovers? Do I have to throw them out?

Not at all! Why miss a morsel of our tasty seafood? Leftovers served cold or warmed up will be good for up to four days after cooking.

Is your seafood ecologically sustainable?

Yes! Sustainability is one of our main missions at Surfin’ Seafood. We have chosen suppliers who focus on purchasing seafood from sustainable fisheries that help protect our oceans. We also consult a variety of sources such as the Environmental Defense Fund and Seafood Selector to ensure that the seafood we offer is the most sustainable choice. I have heard that farmed seafood can be bad for the environment. Is your seafood from fish farms?

No, we do not use fish farms. The only time we offer farmed fish is when farming is the most sustainable, earth-friendly method of harvest, i.e. tilapia, catfish, trout, and prawns. To promote both the health of our customers and the health of our environment, we purchase only all-natural, wild fish from our suppliers – nothing farmed, nothing fake. How did you get the name Surfin’ Seafood?

The name was dreamed up by our founder’s 7-year-old Dillon, who had great fun imagining surfing seafood being delivered door to door!

Why did you start Surfin' Seafood?

We live right next door to Seattle, one of the seafood capitals of the world. If you want steaks delivered to your home, try Omaha. But if you want delicious seafood, Seattle is the place.
